I rebased all the work for this ticket on to of the latest version of the
`develop` branch. The earlier work has been pushed in to a single commit
whilst the main work addressing Karl's comments has been left as a series
of commits to try and be helpful and easier to review. Let me know if any
of this has not made things simple :) Thanks again for your time.
