Fair enough. How about this for a plan: could you open a new ticket
outlining a plan to clean up conversion GF ←→ hex/bit strings so this
doesn't get lost and then we aslso rename the conversion functions to
start with an "_" so that they are not considered part of an official API?
Once that is done, I think this is a positive review.
