 well, "handle them properly" is not straightforward. Actually, I did port
 ve and anusq to modern world systems; I do use them in my research; the
 main issue was the reliance on an very old obsolete version of GMP. See
 http://github.com/gap-packages/ve and https://github.com/dimpase/anusq

 And Simon King has a lot of experience with meataxe - maybe he can tell
 you how to deal with it.

 (anusq, meataxe, and ve are all useless without their binary components).
