I made a few small changes: added a little documentation and added some
doctests for some previously untested parts of the code. We should
probably add more doctests to get even better coverage – for example, I
couldn't figure out how to create links with several isolated components
in order to test the error-raising in the `regions` method – but we can do
more clean-up on another ticket.
