 I wasn't too happy with the repeated `if` and `raise` statements, so I
 tried to clean that up a bit. Also, I've added doctests for `QQ[x]`,
 multivariate polynomial rings, and the number field in `x^2 - 2`. Does
 anything more exotic come to your mind that you would like to have tested
 as well?
