-a and -o are not GNUisms - they existed well before Linux and GNU.
But according to POSIX standards, they are depreciated. From some comments
I've seen on comp.unix.shell, there are a lot more 'gotchas' if you use
them, which I guess is the reason they are not preferred.
The POSIX 2008 standard

says ''The XSI extensions specifying the -a and -o binary primaries and
the '(' and ')' operators have been marked obsolescent. ''
The earlier 2004 standard mentions the problems with -a and -o, but did
not consider them obsolete then. It also has some example of how brackets
should be placed around multiple tests, which are relevant to the above
example.
