The above ticket provided by Mike Hanses applies to 4.3.1.rc0 after
applying the three tickets from #383. We've tested on two separate
machines and it passes all doctests.
Thanks to Mike for helping to track down the (hopefully) last remaining
bug before lunchtime!
I'll go over the code again in the next week or two, adding further
documentation and more doctests. In the meantime, I would be very
grateful if other people interested in reviewing it could start looking at
the code and provide further comments.
