 So what? Some people configure GCC with multi-lib support, and some
 install the necessary 32-bit libraries. On such systems, the current
 scheme "fails" in that it builds a slower 32-bit executable instead of a
 64-bit one, as I noted in one of my first comments here.

 But I'm not aware of any Linux distribution (at least of the "major" ones)
 that ships with / installs these by default. So the "typical" scenario on
 64-bit Linuces is that the 32-bit build fails and a 64-bit build is tried.
 Although that's odd by itself, it's irrelevant, since the scheme fails on
 other systems, like sage.math (or some of my machines). That's why I'd
 change it to what I've posted.
