That's fantastic! It sounds like we should investigate doing that for the
other packages as well (like libpng, etc.) There are some places in the
pkgconfig files where the path is used in places other than the prefix, so
doing this trick may not solve everything, but probably would solve a lot
of the issues with pkgconfig files.
