Okay, after touching iconv, I see the warning in the sage spkg log. (And
this was on a machine where I didn't run "make build" before upgrading, as
Leif says.)

needed a solution to work on any platform. But I've not been following
this ticket closely, so I'll shut up.
At that point, Leif was just suggesting something for me to try on one
machine, a mac, to troubleshoot something, not as an actual solution to
any problem. So it was a safe suggestion.
Anyway, I guess now I'm happy with all but one of the patches (trac_9896
-fix_extension_module_deps-sagelib.patch), and someone else will have to
help with that.
