I don't think John has Sun's {{{grep}}} installed on MacOS X... ;-)

On topic again:
There are two reasons you (John) can't find such messages:
* {{{./sage -upgrade}}} doesn't log to {{{install.log}}} (I used
{{{script}}} to log what happened, also because of #10011.)
* There's a less obvious indirect dependency of Python on iconv (via
GNUTLS, libgpg_error), so the Python spkg got rebuilt, too, which of
course also updated the library search path of distutils.
