 Paul - I wanted it to automatically do the right thing when g is a
 symbolic function.  I agree that this isn't very important since we can
 already just call compose(f,g)(x).  More important is that with symbolics,
 now the powers-of-two optimization will work.  (I don't think it did
 before, but will think more on this).
