Oops, that bit of code needs to be:

if [ "x$SAGE64" = xyes ] ; then
CXXFLAGS="$CXXFLAGS CXXFLAG64"
fi
}}}
which will addend -m64 (or another flag if needed) to CXXFLAGS on 64-bit
builds.
