Leif, I implemented the patch your way. Not because I think it is better,
but because I think there is a bug to be fixed. I also rewrote the
`Makefile` rule not to assume any particular behaviour for
`spkg/pipestatus`.
Please review, I would like to merge this in 4.6.1.
