 I take that back---I had the old jmol installed.  I have the same thing
 that you have.  When I do this from the command line (OSX Snow Leopard):

 sage: f(x,y)=x^2*y
 sage: plot3d(f,(x,-3,3),(y,-3,3))
 }}}

 I get a jmol window that pops up, but the title bar says "zapped", the
 menu and title bar appear, but where the plot should be, it's only black
 with some red text.  The text says (where I've replaced my computer name
 with <MYCOMPUTERNAME>:

 /Users/grout/.sage/temp/<MYCOMPUTERNAME>/79036/tmp_0-size500.jmol
