I don't know autoconf. What exactly does ` PKG_CHECK_MODULES(PNG, libpng,
HAVE_PNG=yes, HAVE_PNG=no)` do? I think it's looking in
`$SAGE_ROOT/local/lib/pkgconfig`, and you should have a libpng12.pc and a
libpng.pc file in there. How exactly does PKG_CHECK_MODULES determine if
libpng is installed?
