Comment:

 Here's a patch implementing the idea above.  I can't figure out a safe way
 to deal with csh and tcsh: the only idea I have is to temporarily
 overwrite the user's .cshrc or .tcshrc file, and this seems risky.  So
 with this patch, the prompts for those shells are not set correctly.
