 ecl_sig_on() etc? Since you are moving things to a .c file, using those
 macros will be much easier.

 Maybe it's a good idea, maybe not.  I do not know how ECL's interrupt
 handling works (and to be honest, I don't feel like studying it).  So
 personally, I am not going to do this now.
