Your data points are amazing! Good that you point us to #9562, it really
seems that it should soon become part of Sage. The link

seems to be broken, though.
Concerning my application, it probably was a very wise decision that my
programs for the computation of Ext algebras of basic algebras are
designed to use ''any'' type of matrices. So, one can easily pick the
fastest available implementation for each base ring. It could be that
eventually I will use M4RI(E) for powers of two, Meataxe for non-prime
fields and and a full-grown Linbox-wrapper for prime fields except GF(2).
