 What does "two marks per byte" mean? Do you store [xxxxxx00][xxxxxx00] or
 [xxxxxx|xx][xxxx0000] i.e. do you fit one element into one byte or do you
 really use every bit? In M4RIE ({{{mzed_t}}} data type) we do the former.
 The other representation {{{mzd_slice_t}}} stores matrices in "slices":
 GF(2) matrices.
