Comment:

 Sorry, I should have tested this on skynet.  I created a new spkg (not
 publicly available yet) which patches `setupext.py` on all platforms, not
 just Darwin.  I tried many of the skynet machines and on all of them but
 iras, both the old and the new spkg seem to work fine.  On iras, as Jeroen
 reports, the old one fails.  The new one works, though.

 So I think we should apply this patch on all platforms.  That's the old
 behavior, after all.  Shall I post a new spkg?
