Slightly off the ticket's topic:
Wouldn't it be better to put a lot of stuff into
`SAGE_ROOT/TROUBLESHOOTING.txt`?
People tend to not read READMEs... (presumably because they're so
ubiquitous and many of them are hardly informative)
