PS: I just tested that even #12215 (which is a lot more aggressive in
using weak references and fixes a gaping leak) is not enough to totally
fix the example from the ticket description. Hence, I think that, for now,
we should be happy with a partial fix and investigate the remaining
problems on different tickets.
