 Now I understand the problem:

 `SymmetricFunctions` is a subclass of `UniqueRepresentation`. By my patch,
 `UniqueRepresentation` is using weak references. Apparently
 `SymmetricFunctions` therefore can be garbage collected, but - and now
 comes the strange point - the coercion system still recalls that a
 coercion to them has already been registered.

 Anyway, with my patch, `SymmetricFunctions(ZZ)` and
 SymmetricFunctions(QQ)` are created repeatedly, and that's bad.
