 By the way, the issue you point out with ZZ coefficients is apparently
 orthogonal to this patch.  Multivariate polynomials over ZZ are handled by
 Singular, and the patch does not touch them.  It only modifies the
 behavior for multivariate polynomials that are implemented as polydict's,
 such as the ones over finite fields of huge characteristic that this
 ticket started with.

 Your ZZ example behaves the same with or without this patch.  If you find
 it really bothersome, maybe it can be on a new ticket.
