I am tempted to leave it as it is for now, apart from Volker's warning. I
was certainly confusing the NULL return value with the empty string, and
it had that nasty effect on the stringstream. It's amazing that there
does not seem to be a proper C++ string version of getenv(). Please don't
wait for yet another upstream code fix before making a decision on this.
This function is not used by code currently wrapped in Sage...
