If `stringstream` would dereference the null pointer your program would
crash. The error is caught and stringstream sets its failure state:

std::stringstream ss;
ss << "a";
if (!ss) std::cerr << "error 1" << std::endl;
ss << (char*)NULL;
if (!ss) std::cerr << "error 2" << std::endl;
return 0;
}
}}}
will print "error 2".
