The ubuntu chroot is 12.04. Also, i have similar slowdowns in previous
versions of sage under mandriva (i couldn't compile the last versions
because of the bug in the time command).
Testing sandpile takes forever indeed.
In the link you gave Dima says that the kernel is to blame.
Can you test it in different systems?
