 There was a definite problem with Sage-GAP communication in Ubuntu.  It
 was Ubuntu's fault if I recall correctly.  Do you have a recent Ubuntu?  I
 first noticed this about a year ago, and it seems to be better (fixed?)
 now (with 12.04).

 Here's one indicator (I didn't look very hard for the root explanation):

 Try doctesting the sandpile.py module, it takes forever in the presence of
 this problem.
