BEIJING (Dow Jones)--China's central bank said Friday it will raise banks' reserve requirement ratio by 50 basis points, following six hikes last year. The increase, which takes effect Jan. 20, is the latest move by China to curb inflation, after the consumer price index rose 5.1% in November from a year earlier, the fastest increase in over two years. It comes after the PBOC raised benchmark lending and deposit rates Dec. 25, the second such hike last year. The last PBOC reserve requirement ratio hike took effect Dec. 20. China's official reserve requirement ratio for most banks will be 19% after the latest hike takes effect, based on the PBOC's announcements. However, state media have reported the central bank may have verbally ordered some banks to set aside more reserves after they had increased lending.
