‘Measures to be taken on Salmona spring pollution’ HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, MARCH 24 Government will initiate specific measures to ensure that the people of Salmon, Saligao are not put to hardships vis-à-vis the pollution of Salmona spring water and wells in surrounding areas, the House was assured Tuesday. Minister for Environment Aleixo Sequeira, who was replying to the calling attention tabled by Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar, said that the spring water and wells in the areas are polluted apparently due to garbage being dumped on the hill above Salmona spring. “I wish to state that due action has been initiated by the Goa State Pollution Control Board which has conducted various tests in the area since June 2004 and lately on March 16, 2009,” he said adding “the reports indicate the presence of Coliforms and the water is not potable and it is advised to refrain from consuming the said water.” He said the GSPCB will also conduct analysis of the water samples from the wells nearby to determine the bacterial and chemical contents. “The GSPCB has been specifically asked to verify the source of the contamination including the garbage dump site as apprehended, so that corrective measures could be initiated through the Saligao village panchayat, Directorate of Health Services and Water Resources Department,” he said. Refuting the claims made by Parulekar of the government inaction in the matter, Sequeira said, “despite several action it would be unfair to indicate any inaction on part of the government.” Further, he said, “government will take specific measures to ensure that the people in the area are not put to any hardship as apprehended.” -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com M +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 http://twitter.com/fn On Facebook: http://www.new.facebook.com/people/Frederick-Noronha/502514643 "Always drink upstream from the herd." - Will Rogers --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ This message comes via the Google Groups "Saligao-Net" group.
