Dear Netters,

Perhaps this is not the first time that Albert is expressing his sentiments on
this net forum wrt a permanent football ground in Saligao. His concern is not
out of place. Unfortunately his is a voice in the wildernest. Saligao has in
the past produced some of the best talents in the field of football who went on
to bring laurels to the State as well as at National and International level.
Only two names that come to my mind of present day footballers who are in the
top league are Denzil Franco, and Bibian Fernandes.

It is rather sad that we don't read abt any Saligao youngsters striking it big
in the football league in Goan football. One of the prime reasons could be the
absence of a all season football stadium (when I say stadium, i don mean a one
with a pavillion, but a standard ground with a good playing turf)available to
the youth in the village.

Most of the villages in Goa are scouting for young talents at school level. I
do not know if there is any programme in youth development (football) at the
Parish/village level. Saligao footballer Francis De Souza, presently SAI Coach
could be roped in to pick youngsters and teach them the rudiments of football.

Here in Vasco I am closely associated in supporting a boys under 14 football
team with the Benfica Youth Club and its a pleasure to see the involvment of
the parents too. Football in Goa is a big time sport and the cream of players
emerge from Goan villages.

Secondly, most of the villages in Goa now have their own football stadium
developement of which is financially supported by the department of sports and
youth affairs. One has to only provide the location and the local MLA has to
pursue the matter with the Sports Ministry. It is rather surprising that so far
the elected representative has not paid attention to the need of the hour. HOw
long and for how many more years will the village youth depend merely on the
fields during the off season to play their sport? A permanent and quality
playfield is the need of the hour for bringing the young boys and girls back to
the playground.

It's no use seating in our drawing rooms and complaining our children are
become more computer oriented rather than playing outdoor sports. Provide the
infrastructure and see the change.

Daniel F de Souza.

I wonder when I will be seeing a permanent football ground in Saligao and
saligao boys playing for our village. We had a very strong team in Saligao.
Some of the players I still see them when I go to saligao.Blasco Fernandes,
Atmaram Parulekar Late Bruno, Albert (not me 0 were some of the names I can
remember. Today all the players are imported players .Where are our boys ? Our
younger generation do not have any interest in sports except on computers.
