Any form of violence against children is completely and totally
*out*. As humans, we *have* to try desperately to learn to use
reason, persuasion, dialogue, love and other non-invasive ways to
relate to children and indeed to adults too. Except that if
violence is the only language the adult knows, because he was
raised that way (the rod was not spared!), then you have to talk
his language, but with an attitude of total love and compassion -
*not* anger, hate, revenge or bitterness.
Easy? No way!! We ourselves have reached nowhere near what we
advocate. Oh yes, we are no saints we can assure you, especially
with our own children. Our behaviour with them would easily
attract many sections of the Goa Children's Act (hope no one
heard that!). But while we know we are dead wrong, we are
doubtless about the road ahead and have a Google Earth map to
guide us ;-) !
Thanks to a fairly enlightened local law, the Goa Children's Act,
2003, section 2 (m) reads:
“Child abuse” refers to the maltreatment, whether habitual or
not, of the child which includes
any of the following:-
(i) psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual
abuse and emotional maltreatment;
(ii) any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or
demeans the intrinsic worth and
dignity of a child as a human being;
(iii) unreasonable deprivation of his basic needs for survival
such as food and shelter; or failure to
immediately give medical treatment to an injured child
resulting in serious impairment of his
growth and development or in his permanent incapacity or
death;
And 12 (3): Corporal punishment is banned in all schools.

This and much more is all there in the law. All we have to do is
implement it. *We failed miserably in the
implementation*...which is just one of many reasons why we
'homskool' our children...but that is a different story!
