Yes MnM and all you good Saligaonetters who care so much for the welfare our children, counselling is very much the need of the hour .I realised this need some years ago when counsellors were almost non existent in Goa.Fortunately the management of the Higher Secondary where i was teaching was very supportive and arranged for me to attend a training course in adolescent counselling and I have done other courses since then. Besides St Theresa's and St Xavier's HSS.I also do a few hours a week in Lourdes Convent and an orphanage in Tivim. Together with the children,somer parents too are involved in the counselling process.Since I am not a therapist I refer them to one if the need arises and Dr Peter Castellino is very good.In fact I was so glad when he used to come to Theresa Trinadade's place some evenings but that has stopped now.Maybe we could approach Theresa or Dr Peter to start a regular time in Saligao again since the premises are available. The place has been renovated and it was intended to be a half way home for people who needed to recover their mental health.I may be wrong but i think the idea didn't work out because good domestic staff was hard to find. There are alot of problems that kids are facing. Conflict with parents,with any kind of authority,addictions,low self esteem,loss of interest in studies are a few common problems but many many more serious types of problems are occuring It's shocking and disturbing.Sexual abuse by family members can be so traumatic for the unfortunate victims and they need help to cope.I thought at first that people in Goa esp. in the villagers did not trust anyone enough to tell their feelings for fear of gossip and taught their children the same. But I was surprised at how eager they were to tell all when they trusted someone to understand and keep their confidence. I have been following the postings on Saligaonet whenever i can but didn't have time to respond.Besides i am not comfortable talking about my work or myself.But now since the topic has been brought up i feel that more awareness can be beneficial. I .am really really glad that so many of you genuinely want more to be done in the area of counselling.I will continue what i am doing when i return to Goa but there is room for more counsellors in Saligao.
