Dear Dr. Dilip,
Greetings to you from sunny Goa !
The questions that you placed before saligaoserenade readers are to be answered
? to a erudote person as you are O am making an exception. But please take
note, the saligaoserenade blog is not for readers to discuss as there are sites
elsewhere for discussions This has been the policy of the blog..However as an
exceptoin, I am giving the relevent books which you may read.
For your first question on the use of jaggery for buildings is well explained
by both Frederick Noronha and Albert D'souza.
Regarding Comunidades de Goa please read the following books, they can be read
at Central Library,Goa, Panjim
1 Rui Gomes Pereira,.Hindu Temples and Deities,Vol. 1, 1978, Panaji, Goa.
2. Rui Gomes Pereira, Goa gaunkari , Vol II,( The old village Associations),
1981, Panaji Goa.
3. The best book on this subject is Bosquejo Historico das
Communidades das aldeas de concelhos das Ilhas, salcete e Bardez, 2da edicao
Bastora Tip Rangel, 1903-1907 in 3 Vols.
4. Afonso Mexia, Foral, 1526 The book is available for reading at Historical
Archive of Goa( HAG), Panjim, Goa
5. Most of the books of Communidade de Saligao are available at Arquivo
Historico de Goa, ( HAG), Ria de Ourem,Pangim.
I went through most of them and there is mine of information.
In some archives in Portugal, there are also books written in old portuguese(
paleography) regarding Saligao of the years 1560 to 1570. I refered them in
2000.

Regarding the Resolutions taken by the Comunidade de Saligao to construct the
Church, the Plan submitted by Major Martins, Budget,Auction, Correspondence of
the Communidade de Saligao with Various Authorities both civil and religious,
the laying of the foundation stone of theew church on 7th February, 1867, the
inauguration and blessing of the church on Nov., 26, 1873, and much more are
all handwritten in Portuguese in the minute book of the Church of Saligao. All
this correspondence is printed in a book in 1923 and distributed on 26th
November, 1923 . This book is by Lopes Lobo, Sebastião José, Igreja de Saligao
, 26 de novembro 1873--26 de novembro de 1923. Esboço Histórico commemorativo
do cinquentenario da sua inauguração', Bastora, Tip. Rangel, 1923, pages 92.
Fr. Lopes Lobo was the Parish Priest of Saligao from May 1922 to 1929. All your
queries are answered in this book. It can be read at Central Library, Panjim
and at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research,( XCHR) Alto Porvorim.
The Comunidade de Saligao was the autonomous Body of the ganvkars of Saligao
village. They constructed the church. and it was Mr. Salvador Pinto from Cotula
the first Major of Mapuca Municipality and leader of Partido Progressivo,
ganvkar jomeiro the man behind the building of the church who said in one of
the meetings " Ami Sodd-soddit korum-ia." Remember' Kator re Baji ? ', in
Saligao it was 'sodd-soddit korum-ia'. That was the simple yet magical phrase
that created a stir in the minds and hearts of Saliganvkar of those times..
Major Martins drew the plan asked by the members of Saligao Communidade
through the Administrator of the Communidade de Mapuca with the approval of the
Government authorities. You may read this correspondence in the book cited
above..
For the simple folk who reads the essays the essays in saligaoserenade I did
not give any references, but your good-self as an erudite person the above
books are given .Kindly refer them
 With kind regards,
fr. nascimento mascarenhas.

Subject: RE: [SALIGAONET] What did it cost to build the Saligao Church?
[Saligao Serenade]

Thanks for posting Val. This is a fascinating historical article about the
building of the church.
A few questions for the group:

  1. I'm intrigued by the jaggery. Was it used as a glue? Or was it a form of
heat insulation? I understand Jaggery is sometimes used to line tandoors.
  2. Quote: " The Inspector of Public Works Department, Major Engineer Martins
was asked to draw up a plan for a Gothic Church, which he did."
Who asked Martins? Was it the Governor (a top-down request) or a bottom-up
(the people)?
  3. Quote: "The Comunidade of Saligao is to pay all expenses of the building."
Pardon my ignorance, but I doubt the communidade was a representative body in
1866 (not that it is now!). How did that order come to pass? Again, was it
top-down or bottom-up? Are there any documented discussions that might have
occurred in Communicade available?
  4. The speed at which the project was sanctioned is breath-taking: 10th april
Major Martins makes request, 20th June Governor agrees. That's really really
quick. Similarly, the additional budget was passed in a matter of a few weeks.
Was this just super-efficient administration or was there a need for speed?
I suspect there was a political policy rapidly to promote the building of
churches throughout portugese Goa, and that's why applications (and budgets)
were passed at such a pace. Was such a policy in existence at that time?

I realise its easy to ask questions and hard to find answers, but its
possible someone in the group might know.

What Did it Cost to Build the Saligao Church?

  by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas

As people from all over the world, with roots in Goa’s northern village of
Saligao, celebrate the 137th anniversary of the inauguration of the Mae de Deus
Church, it’s interesting to look back and establish how much money was set
aside for the construction of our beloved church all those years ago. We begin
with the set-up of things prior to the laying of the foundation stone of the
church. The year is 1866... [Click here to read the entire essay]

  A Red-Letter Day for Saligao

A great joy, a feeling of exaltation, a festive aura seemed to permeate and
spur the village of Saligao. The day had an electrifying effect that charged
everyone with nonpareil happiness. The village seemed to have woken up on the
morning of November 26, 1873, as one unique and compact mass to celebrate the
great day in its history, and to render the greatest possible homage to Our
Lady Mae de Deus under whose mantle protection and maternal care all of the
village would be placed from this day. [Click here to read the entire essay]

  First Mass in Saligao Church

In the new Saligao Church, on 27 November 1873, there was a solemn High Mass
with a choir and music in honour of the Patroness of the Church. After the

The Man Behind the Saligao Church

If one were called upon to single out a specific individual as the greatest
