Wow! What a lot of birds seem to be in Saligao - Harvey must have spent a lot
of time to record all of them & with the "scientific" names too. Sorry I didnt
respond to this earlier, I probably thought of getting to this later &
forgot.....yeh forgot!
I've seen only crows through the years but this time didnt see those either nor
hear them. Good riddance! - Guess our surroundings are so clean nowadays that
there's nothing for the crows to pick on. Saw those small birds like sparrows
around my house & a couple of bulbuls before & parakeets & of course Dad always
had some bird or the other in our house including a minah who used to fool mum
by calling out to Fiona & imitating the sound of the gate opening.
Are those kites like the vultures & feed on anything & everything? Some of the
birds mentioned in the list used to be in our gardens in the 1960's & 1970's
but they disappeared for good suddenly. Kingfisher, bulbuls, owls, eagles that
used to swoop down & pick up the chicks in front of our eyes, ...even though we
used to be keeping an eye on those (ordered to do so by our granny as part of
our work during the holidays) the eagles were swift ...
Seriously though, have seen the owls mentioned in the list, but didnt want them
in the mango tree as I felt every time they hooted early morning, we had a bit
of bad luck or illness that day (part superstition, part coincidence I guess).
I am glad those owls are no longer around. This trip I saw some lovely birds on
the trees in our garden - black & grey with those spikes at the top of their
head (there was some colour in them too). Mum said they were not bulbuls &
when I kept whistling, they stayed put & whistled back in same vein so much so
that Mum & Fiona were surprised & we stopped our work & I continued my
conversation with 2 birds that day for quite a while - jaws started hurting &
mouth got dry so I gave up, - after all it's not easy to whistle the same
notes for too long, gets boring too..... & the work had to be completed of
course.
The usual birds in the field I still see - we called them paddy birds & some
birds our neighbour used to kill & his granny used to make pie (cant remember
the names) . Didnt taste the same, was queasy then (still am) about eating
anything that I could see around me or that I made pets of including the fowls.
Our neighbours used to laugh at us & my granny too, but Dad had to get our
fowls etc. sold as nobody wanted to see them at the table in different form.
After all we had named them all....
Yes I agree, I'm sure there are a lot more birds around in our gardens & fields
- I for one wouldnt know them by a common name nor scientific name.
We are having some real strange weather here & the dust is definitely getting
to me. My fingers are tapping on the keys, my eyes are watering & my nose is
running....... does it bring up an image of a lone, sick bird on its perch? or
what?
