Rico's wish has come through/true ... from books to birds to squirrels to cars
to foxes & jackals ......all in Saligao & all on Saligaonet.
Thought I was the lucky one seeing a couple of birds in our backyard after many
years, guess you are luckier Yvonne. All these kingfishers, owls, woodpeckers
bulbuls were part of our backyard & garden once upon a time, but no longer.
The squirrels are always around & we had two lovely ones as pets in yester
years.
Just a thought .... would it be possible to take photos of these drawings (with
the state of the art cameras around today that a few of you have), & affix them
at the side of the relevant bird name on Harvey's list? In the absence of book
pictures that is..... This is with reference to some one's suggestion about
having pictures to match the birds ont eh list.Read the excerpt - review of
Yvonne's book by August. Valid points of course but I wouldnt dare comment
much since I had a chance to only skim through chapters. However, I would want
to take up the cudgel for "Saligao Foxes". I used to listen to the stories that
the paternal grandparents, maternal grandfather & my dad used to tell about
foxes coming down the hill (Donvaddo, Saligao) as well as to the back door
(Salvador-do-Mundo). Since the 3 males were used to seeing & hearing the
jackals & hyenas in Dodoma (East Africa), they couldnt have been mistaken about
foxes from whence Saliganvkars got the name "Kolle". Whether foxes/jackals
roamed in the paddy fields I wouldnt know as I dont recall any stories of this.
As for the dictionary meaning of foxes & jackals, (aside from the scavenging
bit) there are good & bad attributes, & generally there is good & bad in each
of us, whether Saliganvkars, Goans or non-Goans. So I will concentrate on the
good because that is what we should do - hence cleverness, insight, skilful,
ingenious, ability, dexterity, artful, attractively quaint, small - they
outweigh the bad points eh? This is probably the reason why Saliganvkars in
particular, & Goans in general fit into any niche anywhere in the world &
create niches of their own. We are blessed ....
This is my opinion, perhaps Rico will be very pleased if others on this Net
continued with their opinion - hey hey! immediate resurrection of Saligaonet.
Rico if you can bluff your way through car numbers, I could through foxes &
jackals..ha ha!, but rest assured I am not bluffing, just relating what I heard
through the years. And I've seen a fox & a hyena, but not a jackal though if I
remember my school days & pictures, jackals look like foxes too.

Jenny,I have a few paintings of birds which your Dad did with Shannon when he
was mentoring her in art.I treasure them .
But right now what I'm really enjoying is the various colourful birds that come
to visit my garden, cute yellow honeysuckle,charcoal grey and mustard yellow
bird I've never seen before.,2 bulbuls(I'm trying to figure which type they are
,acc. to Harvey there are 3 types of bulbul.),some black and white long tailed
birds that chirp alot.Once in a while a kingfisher comes to sit on the guava
tree in the back compound even though there is no water or fish around.
Beautiful.
I was thrilled to see a woodpecker ,quite a large one , the other day. and a
brown bird which i think is a heron. Most of them must be migratory birds
because we don't see them throughout the year.
I guess our house is not only close to the fountain but in the midst of many
empty houses. so these 'friends' don't feel afraid to come and visit.

Oh my Goodness! Dad was working on a series of local birds - including those
from the fountain I believe, when he had the fall that landed him in a nursing
home. That was a couple of years ago and marked the beginning of the end for
him, so to speak... He did continue these paintings in his new 'home' but the
light kinda went out of him from then on.He did these birds in water colors and
made sets of them for each of us. Very recently I was showing the ones I have
to my son. Dad has hand written the common name and the scientific name (of
those that he could find) at the base of each picture.How interesting that a
young soul of the village should take the time and trouble to document the same

which had images of these birds alongside the
birdnames and then maybe other details. It would make
the beginning of a visual map of birdlife in Saligao.
