The logging you're talking about sounds like the database-based logging in the 
Enterprise Edition of SA4.  I've got an example of it using my SangfroidJr templates 
here:

Are you using the Enterprise Edition, and do you have MS SQL around?  If so, it's 
fairly easy to set up.
