I personally use something like VNC for remote control, called Remote Administration 2.1, available from www.radmin.com . The advantage to this over VNC is that you can use one of your servers as a gateway, and coming in through that one, can also remotely administer any other server on the same backbone. This comes in handy if you have a need to work on more than one server, especially if the other servers are on a private network, and don't have a static IP address. I typically use a mail server, one visible to the Internet, as the gateway server. It is fairly inexpensive, is secure, and gives a couple of other advantages over VNC, such as file transfers, and telnet from the same console.
Admittedly, it IS a workaround, but a rather elegant one. Even if the same person logs on twice, they will see two different desktops with their own applications running in separate memory space. This is great for security, and for applications like Citrix where you have dozens of people logging into the same server simultaneously, but it's not great for remote control of a server. I'm a Terminal Services fan myself, and there's a few workarounds. You can administer SA over Telnet, you can use VNC for remote control, or you can run SA manually over Terminal Services. To do that last one, you have to stop the service, run SA, make your changes, save them, close SA, and then start the service again. Sounds clumsy, but if you've got an urgent change you need to make that you can't do in Telnet, then it works, anyway.
