APC does not include the cards as standard equipment. But the slots
they go in are the same on all Smart-UPS models - rack and
free-standing.

Well, here's an option, you'll probably need the management cards
anyways. I don't believe any APC units come with the cards already
installed. So, you could buy the cards now, then move them to the new
UPSs later.

When we actually switch to a rack mount unit for the servers(we have
only towers taking up space), we'll move to Network based APC UPS units,
but for now, this is all I've got to deal with. Thanks again for all
the help.

Ah, so this is a continuation of the situation from a few weeks ago?

If so, then my answer stands now as it did then:

Copied from 5/14/07:-----------------------------

As a last note I don't believe the SNMP checks will be available on the
older (serial) connection directly. This isn't a "real" data connection,
APC just uses some of the control lines to signal "on/off Battery" and
"powered on/off". Actually, I'm surprised it's available on the USB one.
This is an "undocumented feature" of the PowerChute software, and I had
limitied success getting it to work in my shop. That is why we switched
over to the Network Management cards. Much cleaner and you can access
the UPS directly from Internet Explorer. Also, pretty cheap (Insight
lists the
AP9617 @ $240).

Also, also, since a server problem can deny you access to the UPS using
PowerChute, moving to the card will give you a much more reliable
picture of what's actually going on in the UPS by accesssing it
directly.

As a side note, 2 advantages of the cards are the ability to use a
simple reed switch (door alarm) to signal when the server rack door was
opened and a temperature/humidity guage to tell when the TELCO closet
was over heating.

And does your UPS "answer" to SNMP GET requests when connected via
USB/serial?

There are 2. On one server, the UPS is connected to it via serial
port(its an old server) and the other its connected via USB. Both are
having the same issue.

How are you accessing the UPS? (Ups connected to PC, Network management

I have another question about monitoring an APC UPS unit with
Serversalive.
I am able to monitor the Battery percentage left, but am unable to
monitor output frequency, input frequency and such. I have tried search
the net for other OIDs to use with SNMP, but none worked. Does anyone
know of any other OIDs I can use with ServersAlive to monitor an APC UPS
unit?

Thanks for the input. That worked. I had SNMP running on one machine
and not the other. As soon as I installed SNMP on the Server I couldn't
monitor, it worked. Thanks for the help.

Have you installed PowerChute Business Edition Server on both machines?

Do both machines have the Windows SNMP commponents installed and
running?

If the answer is yes, then no, try installing just the PowerChute
Bussiness Edition Agent on the one that currently cant' connect, then
adding that server to the other one. (details here:
http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z5QBJ_R0_EN.pdf)

Can you connect to the SNMP port using GetIf? I would also be sure and
use GetIf to inspect (and learn) what's going on with the servers.

As a last note I don't believe the SNMP checks will be available on the
older

Thanks for the help. Worked on one Server, which the UPS was connected
with a USB cable. The other, an old server, the UPS unit is connected
with a
Serial(9pin) cable and that one gives and error when testing. Both are
running the same version of APC and run Windows 2000 Server.

This assumes that you have a network management card installed. If the
back of your UPS has a black metal plate with no markings, you need to
install a AP9617,
AP9618 or AP9619 network amangement card.

I know this was talked about before, but forget what came of it. I
would like to monitor my APC UPS Units with ServersAlive. They are a
SmartUPS1400 and SMartUPS 1500 models.

I have the standard v6 beta of SA.

I would go with the tags as they are not limited in number, self
describing, and would provide more flexibility.
