The alerting engine does not make a difference between a ping check or a remote agent check. So if the "back up" isn't working for the Remote agent checks, then it shouldn't work for the pings (and others) either. Do you edit the entries in between the checks? What does the WHEN tab of Servers Alive show? What exact version of SA are you using?
