I say we build a database within a new dos (EDOS) as a separate
file, that contains a unique ID (like the current file-ID(entificator)
and a descriptor. Something like:

20 BASIC
21 CODE
:
69 MY_TYPE

This way people can add new types without thinking about the
extension. Just add to the SAVE command something like

        SAVE <type>,"name" blah-blah

Only need to make some sort of allocation to official file-types
or something. :)
