Hum, it's quite well documented in books on unix and operating-
systems in general.

I'd really like to help you, SI, but for me to type in everything
I know about the unix file-system and it's structure will take hours
(I had a 6 hours exam on it once), and I think that this is not
the best use of my time (no offence). Besides I have a cold!

The only one I've got in my head is:

Unix System Administration Handbook by Nemeth, Snyder & Seebass
A very good book in most respect, but does not go very deep in
technical details.
