The use of file extensions helps the user know, at a glance, what type of file it is. If the archiver had used a file extension there would not have been the confusion over these types of files. Text files of the sam are shown as code files. If word processors used a different format to hold the text, and no file extension was specified, you would not know what the file should be loaded up into.
