As I mentioned a few moments ago, the Red Hat version of xv has been patched to use version 6 of the jpeg library, but the official xv (which we have here) has not. I am puzzled that you say "A proper XV always could read them" given that xv was last modified in December 1994 but jpeg 6 was only released in August 1995. The xli I am using, on the other hand, is extremely old and I think the one I compiled on my Linux box has also been patched for jpeg version 6 (and PNG). imc
