And here I have been thinking I was smoking something.. In the past several months I have seen the same thing on a few different 5.3p servers.. I also have increased MTAs and maximum connections allowed.. It basically turns into a high water mark that ALWAYS eventually gets reached... Things run smoothly for a long time, then all of a sudden the connections start growing.. POP3 and SMTP... Mostly I see POP3 starting the mess.. I have even spent some time in TCP/View by sysinternals and manually terminate all of the hosed connections.. Sambar seems to still leave them out to dry and not allowing anything new to come in.. This does not seem to effect http access though and I have not seen any crashes.. just no more connections allowed... Solution = restart sambar and babysit.
