Hi,
I have an old workhorse, a Brother DCP 7010. This works (=scans) on Ubuntu 16.04, but refuses to scan on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 (in VM).It prints without any problems.
Try to run your scanning app (xsane or simple-scan or even scanimage, it doesn't matter) from root. The problem may be due to access rights to USB devices.
