Ok I couldn't figure out how to install any packages from Rolf's
repo/site, but it did remind me to check that I do in fact have
sane/xsane packages installed. For some reason I have Simple Scan but
not those two. Installed them and now it works, super-fast and
efficient, color curves, really cool. Glad it's working. Used Synaptic.
