1. shishhyoparAdhe gurordaMDaH

The teacher ought to be punished for his student’s fault. 

2. satAM saMgohi bheshhajaM 

Association with good people is (in and of) itself a medicine

3. bhAvo bhAvaM nigacchati 

Idiom. Closest meaning is, "the birds of a feather flock together."

4. kAvyeshhu nATakaM ramyaM tatra ramyA shakuMtalA
tatrApicha chaturthaa~NkaH tatra shloka chatushhTayam 

Among the literary genres drama is the most beautiful/pleasing. Among dramas 
Shakuntala (Abhijgnana Shaakuntalam by Kalidasa) is the most beautiful/pleasing. In 
that, the fourth act (when Shakuntala prepares to go to her inlaws), and in that 
(fourth act) four shlokas (are the crème de la crème of creative literary works).

5. yato hastas-tato drishhtir yato drishhtis-tato manaH
yato manas-tato bhAvaH yato bhAvas-tato rasaH 

(While dancing) sight is pointed in the direction of the hand, mind goes with the 
sight, feeling/sentiment go with the mind, and the essence of the mood (and its 
portrayal) is generated out of those feelings/sentiments. 

6. dhanyAstA mahiLA yA dayitaM svapne api vIkshante
tena vinA mama nidraiva naiti kA prekshate svapnam! 

dhanya= fortunate; mahiLA = women; dayita= their lovers; svapne = in their dreams; api 
= also; vikshante= are seeing; tena= him; vina = without; nidraiva= even sleep; naiti 
= is not there; kaa= what; prekshate= watching 

Fortunate are those women who see their beloved in their dreams also. (As for me) 
without my love, I can't even sleep, let alone (forget about) watching him in my 
dreams!

This line has been copied over and over again in many songs and in poetry in many 
languages:-)

7. durjanena samaM sakhyaM dveshhaM vApi na kArayet 
ushhNo dahati chA~NgaraH shItaH k^RishhNAyate karam 

One should not develop friendship or enemity with a bad person. (For example) charcoal 
when hot burns you, and when cold blackens (dirties) your hand.

8. buddhir balam yaso dhairyam nirbhayatvam arogata 
ajADyam vAkpaTutvancha hanUmad smaraNAt bhavet 
(You will be blessed with) intellect, physical strength, fame, courage, total 
fearlessness, good health, alertness, articulativeness – all by praying to Hanuman.

9. dAnam bhogo nAshas-tisro gatayo bhavanti vittasya
yo na dadaati na bhuNkte tasya t^RitIyagatir bhavati

Charity, enjoyment, and loss are the three routes wealth can take. One who does not 
either give it to charity or enjoy it himself, is sure to saddle it up for  the third 
route (that is, lose it).  This is by Bhartrihari. 

10.manmano manmanopyeshha mattakokila nisvanaH 
"manmana" means intimate confidential whispering between a man and a woman when they 
are in bed. 
"mattakokila" is a beautifully symmetric poetic meter that goes - 
matta kokila matta kokila matta kokila kokilA, or 
tAna tAnana tAna tAnana tAna tAnana tAna tA

(I don’t know much about gaNas, gurus/laghus, chandas, etc., just how it sounds when 
read aloud).

nisvanaH means noise. It could also be the sound of notes played on a musical 
instrument.

Therefore, the staement should mean - when confidential whispers feverishly go back 
and forth  between a man and a woman in bed, they glide (or slide) into a noise set to 
a beautifully symmetric mattakokila meter. Rest, I leave to your imagination:-)   

11. sAmagAyana pUtaM me nochchishhTamadharekuru
utkaMThita-asiched-bhadre vAmakarNaM dashasva me

This is a parody on strict adhearance to rules. 
It’s also known as shrotriya-veshya nyaayam.

This guy goes to a girl (not his wife) and the girl kisses him on the lips. He 
immediately blurts out:

"My lips are purified by (continuous) reciting of Samaveda, don’t pollute them with 
your dirty saliva," and then he graciously allows, "if however, you my dear girl, 
cannot hold back your expectant excitement, you may nibble on my left ear (to satisfy 
yourself)."  Now why the left ear. The answer is implied. He would only allow his left 
ear to be nibbled because his right ear was the gateway through which he received his 
"gayatri mantra upadesam" during his upanayanam, and therefore that’s off bounds 
too:-))   

12. kashchit kAntA viraha gurUNa svAdhikArAt pramattaH
shApena astaNgamita mahimA varsha bhogyeNa bhartuH
yakshashchakre janaka tanayA snAna puNyodakeshhu
snigdhaH chhAya tarushhu vasatIM rAmagirya ashrameshhu

kashchit  = a certain; kAnta- girl; : viraha = pining for his loved one;  guruNa =  
guru's, teacher's; svadhikarat = knowingly/of his own accord performing his duties; : 
pramattaH = negligent, negligence; shapena = asa result of a curse; : astangamita = 
vanished, lost;: mahima = powers; varsha = one year; bhogyena bhartuH = relegated to 
undergo; yakshaschakre = in the land of the yakshas; janaka tanaya snaana punyodakeshu 
= waters purified (attained divinity) by Seeta taking a bath in them (Seeta having 
taken a bath there purified those waters; it's the other way around with Seeta; 
normally it's the water that purifies us, in Seeta's case, it's she who purifies the 
waters); snigdhaH = fat, big; tarushu = trees; chhAya = shade; vasatiM = lived; 
rAmagiriyAshrameshu = among the sages dwellings (aashrams) in Ramagiri.

A certain yaksha who had been negligent in performing his duties, deprived of his 
powers as a result of a curse from his guru by which he was relegated to undergo one 
year of separation from his beloved settled down among the sages’ ashrams of 
Ramagiri whose waters (long before) were (eternally) purified by the bathing of the 
daughter of Janaka (Seeta) and whose shade trees were in abundance.

This is the first verse of Kalidasa’s Meghadootam. See how quickly he got to the 
point with just one beautiful verse.
