Questions repeated.
1. The following two lines are two questions.
The same lines contain the answer.
a) kaa shiitalavaahinii ga~Nagaa
b) kaM balavantaM na baadhate shiitam
Find the answers.
2. The fourth line of a verse is
pipiilikaa dantivaraM prasuute
meaning - ant gives birth to a big elephant.
You are required to compose the first three
lines of this samasyaa.

The river that flows at the foot of
Benares (kaashii) is Ganga.
b) kaM balavantaM na baadhate shiitam -
What strong person does cold not bother?
Answer: kaMbalavantaM na baadhate shiitam
Cold does not bother the person who
is wrapped up in a woolen blanket.
2. aastiikaH jarutkaaruvoH
maataa mR^igiH R^iShyashR^ingaM.
vaarte eShaH ko visheShaH

Explanation:
The great rishi Aastiika came from (was born to)
Jaratkaaruvu. Jaratkaaruvu is a snake and Vaasuki's sister. Aastiika was instrumental
in persuading Janamajeya to stop his "sarpa-yaaga."
The great rishi Rishyashringa came from
(was born to) a deer. I believe everyone knows
Rishyashringa's story. (Therefore), what is so special about this news (that) an ant
gives birth to a big elephant.

(Which strong man is not troubled by cold?)

2. The first three lines are questions and the
last line has the answers.
a) kaa khaadate bhuumigataan manuSyaan
What bites those who walk on the floor?
b) kam hanti siMhaH prakaTaprabhaavaH?
Whom does a powerful lion kill?
c) karoti kiMvaa paripuurNagarbhaa ?
What does a fully pregnant womon do?
d) pipiilikaa (a), dantivaram (b) prasuute (c)
ant, a big elephant, gives birth
The first three lines are questions for which the
answers are given by the three words in the last
line.
My general comments.
Q. 1 Members may themselves decide which one is partly correct, correct or more
correct.
Q.2. The last line in the samasyaa is a verse containing 11 syllables or aksharaas.
Therefore the first three lines aslo should have 11 syllables. The answers given by
Vis Tekumalla and Aarathi Sankaran do not fulfill this condition.

PM and the question of foreign origin
A STORY FROM HITOPADESA
Hitopadesa was written about 1500 years ago. Hitopadesa means good advice. The author
himself says that he has taken most of the stories from Panchatantra. All situations
are given in the form of stories using birds and animals as characters.
In the country of land birds a peacock named Chitravarna was the king. He had a
visitor called Diirghamukha, a crane from the country of water birds. Chitravarna�s
PM was a vulture named Duuradarshi. He enquired from Diirghamukha who the king and PM
were in his country. He gave their names as Hiranyagarbha, a swan and Chakrvaaka, a
goose. Duuradarshi opined that it was very proper that Chakravaka was the PM as he
was born in the same country.
He supported this by a saying -
svadeshajaM kulaachaara-vishuddhaM upadhaa-shuchim.
mantraj~naM avyasaninaM vyabhichaara-vivarjitam ..
adhiita-vyavahaaraarthaM maulaM khyaataM vipashchitam.
arthasyotpaadakaM chaiva vidadhyaat mantriNaM nR^ipaH ..
The king should appoint a Prime Minister who should
have the following attributes.
svadeshajaH (born in the same country ),
kulaachaara-vishuddhaH (correct in observing the
traditions of the family/community/country ),
upadhaashuchiH (of tested loyalty),
mantraj~naH (a good advisor),
avyasanii (not addicted to any vice),
vyabhichaara-vivarjitaH (not deviating from the right course),
adhiitavyavaharaarthaH (well versed in administrative matters),
maulaH (of good family),
khyaataH (a celebrity),
vipashchit(learned),
arthasyotpaadakaH (a generator of wealth)
